Value of the 1995 fresh vegetable crop was estimated at $7.42 billion, a gain of 14 percent from 1994. Harvested area covered 1.82 million acres, down 1 percent from a year earlier. California continued to be the leading fresh market state accounting for 40 percent of the area harvested, 46 percent of the production, and 52 percent of the value. The three largest crops were lettuce, sweet corn, and watermelons which accounted for 38 percent of the total vegetable production. Lettuce, tomatoes, and onions were the most valuable crops accounting for 34 percent of the total value.
