DC_GR310 Manhattan, KS Tue February 05, 2019 Kansas Department of Agriculture Kansas Hay Market Report Ground/Grinding alfalfa movement: Southwest/South Central Tonnage: 8,973/6,253 Last week: 7,128/5,182 Last year: 9,217/4,515 Hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Demand remains moderate to very good, especially for grinding alfalfa and good quality grass hay. Despite the demand, prices have remained mostly steady overall but nudged higher on grass hay. Inquiries have picked up for those who have hay to sell. Both alfalfa and grass hay producers are receiving calls from surrounding states looking for hay. It's no wonder, with the visit from the polar vortex we just had. Kansas did not break any records, but it sure felt like we should have. The plunging sub-zero temperatures and bitterly cold, double digit, wind chills made feeding livestock un-pleasurable to say the least and causing livestock producers to burn through feed supplies. If you have any extra hay to sell and/or need hay here in Kansas, use the services of the Internet Hay Exchange: www.hayexchange.com/ks.php.
