A few of California's dairy farmers are forecasting losses this year due to the limited supply of water from the on-going drought. Uncertainty is widespread as some dairy farmers indicate that the only way to profit, as costs increase, is to feed cows with grass grown in pastures, but without much water, growing grass is arduous. To put things into perspective, the state is home to nearly 1.7 million dairy cows. Meanwhile, the state has begun the implementation of the "Sustainable Groundwater Management Act" (SiGMA), requiring local agencies to manage groundwater basin usage. A central concern farmers express is that SiGMA be phased-in, to allow flexibility in water allocations and use, from year to year. ORGANIC GRAIN FEEDSTUFF OVERVIEW Organic Feed Market Demand. There is no exception in the organic grain market as corn, soybean, and wheat have firmed due to several factors. In the U.S. northern plains region, 87 percent of the region is seeing drier than normal conditions, which stretch a limited water supply. Hence, the largest U.S. organic wheat producing state could play an important role in the organic feed grain market. Consequently, some market sources see feed demand for organic wheat declining 5%, as the market slows over 2021-22 due to higher organic feed prices. As organic corn production expands, sources see the demand for organic corn for animal feed increasing by 3% from the 2020-21 marketing year based on price influence from reductions in dairy cow inventories. The same market source expects 2021-22 organic soybean harvested areas to grow 19 percent year-over-year while organic soybean meal feed demand could decline 3 percent over 2021-22. National Organic Grain Feedstuff. This week, organic feed corn market activity has been moderate on good demand, with trades occurring 65 cents higher FOB. Organic feed soybean trade activity is light on very good demand trading. Trading moved 2.37 higher delivered elevator. New crop soybean contracts range 37.00 to 41.00 FOB. Organic soybean meal and oil trades strengthened. Trade was inactive on all other organic grains.
