United States and Canadian Cattle Inventory Down 1 Percent All cattle and calves in the United States and Canada combined totaled 113.9 million head on July 1, 2011, down 1 percent from the 115.1 million on July 1, 2010. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 45.8 million head, were down 1 percent from a year ago. All cattle and calves in the United States as of July 1, 2011, totaled 100.0 million head, 1 percent below the 101.1 million on July 1, 2010. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 40.6 million head, were down 1 percent from a year ago. All cattle and calves in Canada as of July 1, 2011, totaled 13.9 million head, down 1 percent from the 14.0 million on July 1, 2010. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 5.18 million, were down 2 percent from a year ago.
