U.S. - Canadian Cattle Inventory Down Slightly This publication is a result of a joint effort by Statistics Canada and NASS to release the number of cattle and calves by class and calf crop for both countries within one publication. This information was requested by the U.S. cattle industry to provide producers additional information about potential beef supplies. U.S. inventory numbers were previously released on July 20, 2007. Please note that the Canadian data contained in this release have been adjusted to align with the results of the May 16, 2006, Canadian Census of Agriculture published last May. The primary focus of the adjustments is on the inventory estimates at the national and provincial level and in some cases, the adjustments were smoothed back to 2002. The estimates related to production have not been affected substantially. All cattle and calves in the U. S. and Canada combined totaled 120.7 million head on July 1, 2007, down slightly from a year ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 48.6 million head, was down slightly from a year ago. All cattle and calves in the United States as of July 1, 2007, totaled 104.8 million head, slightly below the 105.2 million on July 1, 2006 but 1 percent above the 104.2 million two years ago. All cattle and calves in Canada as of July 1, 2007, totaled 15.9 million head, down 1 percent from the 16.0 million on July 1, 2006, and 6 percent below the 16.9 million two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 6.1 million, was down 1 percent from the 6.2 million on July 1, 2006, and 6 percent below the 6.5 million from two years ago.
