Potatoes in storage accounted for 33 percent of the fall storage States' production, up 2 percentage points from a year ago. This year's record high stocks exceeded the previous record set April 1, 1997 by 4 percent. Disappearance from the start of harvest to April 1 was a record high 308 million cwt. This disappearance was up 5 percent from the last two years and 4 percent above the previous record set during the 1996 season. The disappearance during March was 44.3 million cwt, up 7 percent from last year. Shrink and loss, to this point in the season, was 35.4 million cwt, up 31 percent from last year and 32 percent above two years ago. This disappearance and loss total includes potatoes diverted and destroyed by growers under a cooperative program to reduce surpluses. Processing of 2000 crop potatoes totaled 151 million cwt to April 1, up 1 percent from last year in comparable States. In March, processors used 19.9 million cwt of potatoes, down 5 percent from last year in comparable States. Eastern States stored 7.20 million cwt of potatoes on April 1, 2001, down 14 percent from a year ago but 6 percent above two years ago. Maine's holdings were down 8 percent and New York's stocks were off 57 percent from last year. Pennsylvania's storage was down 40 percent from last year. Central States accounted for 27.3 million cwt of potato stocks this April 1, 17 percent above April 2000 but 3 percent below 1999. Minnesota's stocks were up 72 percent and the Nebraska-Ohio combination was up 42 percent. Stocks in North Dakota were up 32 percent from last year. Wisconsin's stocks were down 13 percent and Michigan's potato stocks were 44 percent below a year ago. Western States held 120 million cwt of potatoes in storage on April 1, 2001, up 24 percent from the last two years. Washington's potato stocks were up 61 percent from a year ago, while Idaho's stocks increased 19 percent, and Oregon's were up 5 percent. Colorado's stocks increased 2 percent from last year and Montana's were up 27 percent. California's potato stocks were down 29 percent from a year ago. Reliability of April 1 Stocks Estimates The "Root Mean Square Error" for the April 1 stocks estimate is 4.9 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current estimate of 154 million cwt will not be above or below the final estimate by more than 4.9 percent or approximately 7.5 million cwt. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90 percent confidence level) that the difference will not exceed 8.5 percent or approximately 13.1 million cwt. The 10-year (1991-2000) record of differences between the April 1 stocks estimates and the final estimates averaged 4.9 million cwt, ranging from 0.74 million cwt above the final to 12.8 million cwt below the final. During the 10-year period, the April 1 estimate has been below the final estimate 9 years and above 1 year.
