JC_LS135 Jefferson City, MO Fri Dec 13, 2019 MO Dept of Ag-USDA Market News Missouri Weekly Direct Slaughter Cattle (week end 12-13-2019) Confirmed Sales: Week to date: 160 Last week: 120 Last Year: 320 ( These prices acquired from Missouri producers ) Trading from late last Friday through Friday morning of this week remains inactive as of Friday morning with producers passing bids. All sales are from late last Friday on flat dressed sales at 188.00. Fed cattle for the most part have yet to trade this week with bids from the packers mostly steady with last week. Continued pressure on the boxed- beef values has packers digging in and not wanting to pay more than steady money at this time. With live cattle futures trading in a sideways to narrow pattern futures remain mixed as traders are looking forward to the holidays. Last week’s slaughter of 679K was the largest of the year and this week’s estimating to be near that of last week. Large slaughter levels are usually a bullish indicator; even though cut- out values have declined they still remain several dollars above last year’s level on Choice product. Demand for beef remains very good and responsible for record packer margins, but boxed-beef prices are under pressure and lower cut-out values directly impact packer margins. This pressure on the cut-out value has the ability to change packer attitudes in a hurry. Choice boxed-beef on Thursday closed 3.00 lower at 215.63 and Select 1.16 lower at 202.56 with a Choice-Select spread narrowing to 13.09, compared to last Friday’s close with Choice at 224.56 and Select at 207.30. The hide and offal value from a typical slaughter steer on Thursday was estimated at 9.12 per cwt live down .16 cents when compared to Wednesday’s value.
