CME cattle futures struggled on Thursday and closed lower as did most commodities including grains despite the US-China Phase 1 agreement signed, maybe the hype is now over. Trade started in the Southern Plains on Thursday afternoon at steady money of 124.00 as the lower futures played into the packers hand and packers took advantage. Boxed-beef values have been grinding and started to see some small gains this week with Select gaining on the Choice product. This week’s kill is estimated to be near 630,000. Thursday Choice closed .37 cents higher at 212.90 with Select 1.80 higher at 211.47, with Choice-Select spread of just 1.43 compared to last Friday’s close with Choice at 210.04 and Select at 206.55. The hide and offal value from a typical slaughter steer on Thursday was estimated at 9.20 per cwt live, down .01 cent when compared to Wednesday’s value.
