Da 1-2 (97) Milk Production, Disposition and Income 1996 Summary Milk Production, Disposition, and Income 1996 Milk production decreased 1 percent in 1996 to 154 billion pounds. The rate per cow at 16,505 pounds, was 72 pounds above 1995. The annual average number of cows on farms at 9.35 million head, was 107,000 less than 1995. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 1996 at $22.8 billion dollars, was 15 percent above 1995. Producer returns averaged $14.94 per hundredweight, $2.01 per hundredweight above 1995. Marketings totaled 153 billion pounds, 1 percent below 1995. Marketings include whole milk sold to plants and dealers as well as milk sold directly to consumers. An estimated 1.49 billion pounds of milk were used on farms where produced, 6 percent less than 1995. Calves were fed 80 percent of this milk with the remainder consumed in producer households.
