MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 33 - Released on August 18, 2022 Midwestern milk output remains in a seasonal cycle of incremental slowdowns. Southern area milk output has clearly shifted lower as triple digit temperatures have been regular. Class I intakes are markedly moving higher, as school districts have either begun or are in preparations across the region. There were some more, although incremental, milk movements into the Southeastern region from the upper Midwest. Still, some contacts predicted those movements to be more rampant than they currently are, as the region had more milk on hand than expected. Cream spinoff from bottlers has not flowed into processing, though. Cream availability has noticeably tightened up throughout the region, from north to south. Multiples have been moving up for a few weeks, but this is the first week that butter plant contacts say their access to spot loads of cream was a blank. Extended shelf-life (ESL) retail items, cream cheese, and ice cream manufacturers continue to play a role in keeping cream supplies in check. Milk availability into cheese production, though, is still somewhat steady week to week. All reported spot prices, in the upper Midwest, were discounted this week. There are some expectations that spot milk will begin to tighten up near-term. Overall corn conditions are reportedly declining in a number of Central region states, particularly in the Northern Plains due to dryness and heat. The NASS August Crop Production report shows a five percent decline year to year, which is another concern for dairy farmers who are already contending with higher fertilizer and other production costs.
