MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 46 - Released on November 17, 2022 Milk production in the region is continuing to increase week by week. Farmer contacts say cow comfort is nearly ideal, as fall weather in many parts of the region has been noted as mild. That being said, the upper Midwest has started to experience some wintry mixes, along with below-freezing temperatures throughout the upcoming weekend. Still, both producers and processors have reported an uptick on both milk and milkfat in recent weeks. Class I demand is seasonally hearty. After schools reopened in the late summer/early fall, bottlers' orders jumped, as expected. Since then, bottling has been generally steady, and in the past month, orders for retailers ahead of the holidays have grown. Cheesemakers say spot milk is generally balanced. A number of cheesemaking contacts say they are running full 7-day workweek schedules, as slight discounts to slight premiums were reported for spot milk loads this week. A few Class III contacts expect little to no change in milk availability moving into the holiday week, despite some plants closing down an extra day or two. Cream availability has grown. Butter makers report they are finding cream within the region at multiples below 1.20. Ice cream manufacturing has slowed notably, which many contacts expected. Butter plant managers say they are churning as much cream as possible, as stores are not necessarily loose ahead of the end-of-year holiday. Corn harvests, for grain, are nearing completion in most of the upper Midwest. Price Range - Class III Milk; $/CWT; Spot Basis: -.50 - 1.00 Trade Activity: Moderate Midwestern U.S., F.O.B.
