MD_DA230 Fluid Milk and Cream - Central U.S. Report 45 - Released on November 10, 2022 Incremental weekly milk growth over the past month has evolved into more discernible growth, and contacts expect similar trends until winter-like weather deters cow comfort levels. Cold fronts are pushing through most of the region as soon as Friday. Below-freezing temperatures are expected from Oklahoma through the upper Midwest. Some Texas dairy farmers are expecting rain and cooler temps, but generally mild temperatures for the remainder of the week, which is expected to keep production steady in the southernmost area of the Central U.S. Class II plants are taking on more milk in the upper Midwest, according to contacts. Class I and Class III plant managers say intakes are steady, but milk volumes on offer are lighter, in general. Spot milk prices into cheese plants ranged from $1 under to $.50 over Class. Cream availability is steady to slightly more available. Some butter plant managers say spot cream is within their fiscal grasp, and they would take on larger volumes than what are currently on offer. At report time, tropical storm Nicole has weakened while making landfall, but contacts said more Midwestern and mid-Atlantic cream is staying "at home," as plants in the Southeast were closing down from mid- through late-week. Texas and Oklahoma farmer contacts say wheat is in the ground, and they are hopeful for a mild winter. Some much needed rainfall over the past two weeks has given them a canvas to work with, as some who tried to plant in mid-October said it was simply impossible with the dry, hard ground. Corn harvest in the upper Midwest, by most accounts, is going smoothly and nearing completion in most areas. A number of states are well ahead of the five-year average. Soil conditions are still notably dry in certain areas of the Northern Plains states. The DMN monthly average of the range price series for Upper Midwest Class II cream during October was $4.1936, compared to $4.3164 in September.
