HDR1012000110140930960830SMALL GRAINS SUMMARY National Agricultural Statistics Service September 1996 Cr Pr 2-3(96) Small Grains 1996 Summary All Wheat Production Up 5 Percent All wheat production for 1996 totaled 2.28 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the September forecast, but 5 up percent from 1995. The U.S. yield was placed at 36.3 bushels per acre, up 0.5 bushels from 1995. Grain area was estimated at 62.9 million acres. This is slightly less than the last forecast, but up 3 percent from last season. Oats production in 1996 was estimated at 155 million bushels, 4 percent below last year's crop, and was the lowest oat production estimated since 1866. Yields per harvested acre for grain averaged 57.8 bushels, up 3.1 bushels from 1995. Area harvested for grain, at 2.69 million acres, was down 9 percent from last year, and is the lowest harvested acreage since estimates were first made. Barley production in 1996 was estimated at 397 million bushels, 10 percent above last year's estimate and the highest production since 1993. Average yield per acre, at 58.5 bushels, was up 1.2 bushels from 1995. The area harvested for grain was estimated at 6.79 million acres, 8 percent more than a year ago. This is the largest acreage since 1992 when 7.29 million acres were harvested. This report was approved on September 30, 1996, by the Secretary of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Statistics Service's Agricultural Statistics Board. Wheat Class Percentage Estimates The following percentages are the basis for the U.S. wheat production by class estimates each year. These estimates are based on the latest varietal survey data available. The percentages used for the 1996 end-of-season production by class estimates will be used during the 1997 forecast season. However, if an unusual situation significantly distorts a State's typical distribution, then updated percentages are used during the forecasts. Oats: Production of oats for 1996 was estimated at 155 million bushels, 4 percent below last year's crop. This is the lowest oat production on record since 1866. Yields per harvested acre for grain averaged 57.8 bushels, up 3.1 bushels from 1995. Area harvested for grain, at 2.69 million acres, was down 9 percent from last year, and is the lowest harvested acreage since estimates were first made. Seeded area totaled 4.66 million acres, down 26 percent from the 1995 acreage. Final oat production was 2 percent below the forecast in the August "Crop Production" report. Yield per acre was down from last month's estimate by 1.2 bushels, while harvested acres were up slightly. Seeding of the 1996 crop was delayed in the Northern States by spring rains. Hot, dry weather during the growing season in the Northwest reduced disease problems but also lowered yields. Adequate soil moisture during July in the Midwest and favorable harvesting weather in August improved crop conditions and allowed producers to realize yields higher than previously expected. Oats harvested for the 9 major producing States was 92 percent complete by September 1, five percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Barley: Production in 1996 was estimated at 397 million bushels, 10 percent above last year's estimate and the highest production since 1993. Average yield per acre, at 58.5 bushels, was up 1.2 bushels from 1995. The area harvested for grain was estimated at 6.79 million acres, 8 percent more than a year ago. This is the largest acreage since 1992 when 7.29 million acres were harvested. Final production was 1 percent above the September 1 forecast. Area harvested increased slightly and average yield per acre increased 0.2 bushels from the last forecast. North Dakota continued to rank as the number one barley producing State, followed by Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, and Washington. Cool, wet weather delayed the start of spring plantings in North Dakota and Minnesota, but conditions improved and seedings were completed on a near normal schedule. Timely rains helped promote crop development and final yields for these two States were 10 and 14 bushels per acre, respectively, above a year ago. Conversely, drought like conditions in Montana and northern Idaho during the mid-summer months reduced yields 9 and 7 bushels per acre, respectively, from 1995. Winter Wheat: The 1996 winter wheat production was estimated at 1.48 billion bushels down 1 percent from the August forecast and 4 percent from 1995. Yields averaged 37.2 bushels per acre. This is down a tenth from the last forecast and a half bushel less than the 1995 average. Harvested area was estimated at 39.7 million acres, down 1 and 3 percent from August and last year, respectively. Idaho, Oregon, and Washington growers averaged record high yields. Forecasted head counts and head weights from Washington's Objective Yield survey are about the same as last month. Both are above average. Michigan growers' yields were the lowest since 1976. Most Soft Red Winter producing states had lower yields than previously expected. Exceptions were Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, and Mississippi. The Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi averages are record highs. Hard Red Winter yields were generally higher than the last forecast. Montana's final yield was the exceptions, dropping 4 bushels per acre from last month. Other Spring Wheat: Production in 1996 was estimated at 688 million bushels, up slightly from the September forecast and 28 percent more than in 1995. This is the second highest production on record. Harvested area was 19.6 million acres, up a little from the last forecast to the highest level since 1919. An increase in South Dakota more than offset a drop in Oregon's grain area. The U.S. yield was 35.1 bushels per acre, unchanged from September but 2.9 bushels per acre over last year. Harvest progress neared, or was at, completion in most states as of September 23. The predominantly White spring growing area in the Pacific Northwest realized better than expected yields with Idaho up 2 bushels and Oregon up 7; Washington was unchanged. The Oregon yield is a record high for spring wheat. Hard Red Spring states yields ended up a little lower than the last forecast as both Minnesota and Montana declined a bushel. Final harvested yield in South Dakota was a record high. Head scab problems, overall, turned out less severe than in the previous three years. Objective Yield survey data showed little change in head populations from earlier in the month, and just a slight increase in gross weight per head. Durum wheat: Durum production for 1996 was estimated to total 116 million bushels, up 2 percent from the last forecast and 13 percent more than in 1995. The U.S. yield is placed at 32.7 bushels per acre, down 0.3 bushels from the last forecast. Area for grain now totals 3.55 million acres, up 3 and 6 percent from the last forecast and 1995, respectively. As of September 23, 81 percent of the North Dakota Durum area was combined. This was 3 points ahead of last year and 6 ahead of average. Rye: Production for 1996 was estimated at 9.02 million bushels, down 10 percent from 1995. Harvested area was 347,000 acres also down 10 percent. The U.S. yield was placed at 26.0 bushels per acre, down 0.1 bushels from 1995. Both the area and production level are the lowest on record.
