Cr Pr 2-3 (97) Small Grains 1997 Summary All wheat production totaled 2.53 billion bushels in 1997, up 1 percent from the last forecast and 11 percent better than the 1996 crop. This is the biggest production since 1990 and the 5th largest on record. Area for grain increased slightly from September 1 to 63.6 million acres, up 1 percent from last year. The derived U.S. yield is a record high 39.7 bushels per acre. This is 3.4 bushels better than 1n 1996. Oat production in 1997 totaled 176 million bushels, 13 percent above last year's record low crop. Despite the increased production over 1996, the 1997 crop is still the third lowest production on record since 1866. Yield per harvested acre for grain averaged 60.5 bushels, up 2.7 bushels from 1996 and the third highest yield on record. Area harvested for grain, at 2.91 million acres, was up 8 percent from last year, and is the second lowest harvested acreage since estimates were first made. Barley production in 1997 was estimated at 374 million bushels, down 1 percent from the September forecast and 5 percent below last year's estimate. Average yield per acre, at 58.3 bushels, was down 0.2 bushels from 1996. The area harvested for grain was estimated at 6.43 million acres, 5 percent less than a year ago. This report was approved on September 30, 1997. These estimates are based on the latest varietal survey data available. The percentages used for the 1997 end-of-season production by class estimates will be used during the 1998 forecast season. However, if an unusual situation significantly distorts a State's typical distribution, then updated percentages are used during the forecasts. Oats: Production of oats in 1997 totaled 176 million bushels, 13 percent above last year's record low crop. Despite the increased production over 1996, the 1997 crop is still the third lowest production on record since 1866. Grain yield per harvested acre averaged 60.5 bushels, up 2.7 bushels from 1996 and the third highest yield on record. Area harvested for grain, at 2.91 million acres, was up 8 percent from last year, and is the second lowest harvested acreage since estimates were first made. Final oat production was down 6 percent from the forecast in the August "Crop Production" report. Harvested acres declined 10% from last month's estimate. In North Dakota, harvested area declined due to a regional hay shortage and low grain yields. Similar circumstances were reported in several other States in the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley. Yield was up 2.4 bushels from the August forecast. In North Dakota and surrounding States, the lowest yielding acres were harvested for hay, thus increasing yield. Also, oat growers in several eastern Corn Belt States realized record or near record yields. The start of oat planting was delayed by extensive flooding in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota. Cool, wet soils in the Northwest also delayed planting. Soil moisture supplies were adequate for the growing season, except in the northern Plains. There hot, dry weather allowed the crop to catch up to the normal pace of development but stressed the crop during critical stages of growth. During August, generally hot, dry weather across the U.S. provided ideal harvest condition. Oats harvested in the 9 major producing States was 91 percent complete by August 31, 5 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Barley: Production in 1997 was estimated at 374 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year's estimate. Average yield per acre, at 58.3 bushels, was down 0.2 bushels from 1996. The area harvested for grain was estimated at 6.43 million acres, 5 percent less than a year ago. Production was 1 percent below the September 1 forecast. Area harvested increased slightly from the previous forecast, but average yield per acre declined one bushel. North Dakota continued to rank as the number one barley producing State, followed by Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Minnesota. These five States produced over three-fourths of the 1997 barley crop. Harvest in North Dakota began winding down through September, on pace with a year ago but ahead of normal. Acres harvested for other uses or abandoned increased from the previous year due to dry conditions in the western portion of the State, head disease in the east, and a regional shortage of hay. North Dakota yields dropped 10 bushels from 1996 to 45.0 bushels per acre. Conversely, yields in Montana increased 10 bushels over 1996 as timely rains during the growing season helped set the stage for an excellent year. The eastern portion of the State experienced some drought like conditions early in the summer, but late rains proved beneficial and boosted yields. Spring field preparation progressed at a much slower rate across Washington due to cold, wet conditions. Seedings progressed at a below normal rate early in the season, but reached normal progress by mid-May. The crop was slower to develop due to cool temperatures, but conditions throughout most of the year were rated as good to excellent. Average yield in Washington, at 76.0 bushels per acre, surpassed the previous record of 75.0 bushels set in 1980. Winter Wheat: The 1997 winter wheat production was estimated at 1.88 billion bushels, up 1 percent from the August forecast and 27 percent more than 1996. This is the largest production level since 1990. Yields averaged a record high 45.0 bushels per acre. This is up 0.4 bushels from the last forecast and nearly eight bushels per acre better than the 1996 average. Harvested area was estimated at 41.8 million acres, up 1 and 5 percent from August and last year, respectively, largely due to an increase in the Kansas harvested area. Hard Red Winter yields were generally unchanged from August 1. Final survey data confirmed Kansas' record crop and that Oklahoma had averaged the highest yield per acre since 1988. Colorado and South Dakota growers averaged a bushel less than the last forecast. But Montana's final yield increased two bushels per acre. Most Soft Red Winter producing states enjoyed better yields than had been expected earlier. Spectacular increases were noted in the Delmarva region, New Jersey and West Virginia resulting in record or near records in all cases. The Carolina yields were unchanged and equaled record highs. The Illinois and Ohio yields are new record highs. Missouri's average yield dropped to 55 - still an all time high. Washington growers' average yields were up from the August forecast while Oregon's dropped. Idaho's average equals the previous record high, as does New York's. Michigan yields were at a new high average. Other Spring Wheat: Production in 1997 was estimated at 558 million bushels, down 1 percent from the September forecast and 19 percent less than in 1996. Harvested area was 18.7 million acres, down 5 percent from last year. A decrease in North Dakota more than offset the Minnesota increased grain area. The U.S. yield was 29.9 bushels per acre, down a tenth of a bushel from September, and 5.2 bushels per acre below last season's average. This is the lowest U.S. yield since 1989. Harvest progress neared, or was at completion in most states as of September 21. The predominantly White spring growing area in the Pacific Northwest realized better than expected yields with Idaho up 5 bushels and Washington up one from the last forecast. The Washington yields equal the record high for spring wheat. Hard Red Spring states yields ended up a little lower than the last forecast as both Minnesota and South Dakota declined a bushel. Objective Yield survey data showed little change in head populations and in gross weight from earlier in the month. Durum wheat: Durum production for 1997 was estimated to total 86.2 million bushels, down 4 percent from the last forecast and 26 percent less than in 1996. The U.S. yield is placed at 27.7 bushels per acre, down 0.4 bushels from the last forecast to the lowest average in eight years. Area for grain now totals 3.11 million acres, down 3 and 13 percent from the last forecast and 1996, respectively. As of September 21, 92 percent of the North Dakota Durum area was combined. This compares to 80 percent last year and the 70 percent average. Rye: Production for 1997 was estimated at 8.91 million bushels, down 1 percent from 1996. Harvested area was 341,000 acres, down 2 percent. The U.S. yield was placed at 26.1 bushels per acre, up 0.1 bushels from 1996. Both the area and production level are the lowest on record.
