U.S. - Canadian Hog Inventory Up 1 Percent This publication is a result of a joint effort by Statistics Canada and NASS to release the total hogs, breeding, market hogs, sows farrowed, and pig crop for both countries within one publication. This information was requested by the U.S. hog industry to provide producers additional information about potential hog supplies. U.S. inventory numbers were previously released on March 24, 2005. Inventory of all hogs and pigs for March 2005 in the U.S. and Canada, was 74.6 million head. This was up 3 percent from March 2003, and up 1 percent from 2004. The breeding inventory, at 7.59 million head, was down slightly from both a year ago and from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 67.0 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, but down 1 percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 33.9 million head, was up 6 percent from 2003 and up 1 percent from 2004. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 3.74 million head, up 1 percent from last year. U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2005 was 59.9 million head. This was up 1 percent from March 1, 2004, but down 1 percent from December 1, 2004. The breeding inventory, at 5.94 million head, was down slightly from both March 1, 2004 and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 54.0 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, but down 1 percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 25.5 million head, was up 2 percent from 2004 and up 4 percent from 2003. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 2.85 million head, up 1 percent from last year. Inventory of all hogs and pigs on April 1, 2005 in Canada, was 14.7 million head up 1 percent from April 1, 2004 and up slightly from January 1, 2005. The breeding inventory, at 1.65 million head, was up 1 percent from a year ago, but virtually unchanged from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 13.0 million head, was up from both last year and last quarter. The pig crop, at 8.36 million head, was up 1 percent from 2004, and up 10 percent from 2003. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 886,000 head, up 1 percent from last year.
