July 1, 1998, All Sheep and Lambs Totals 9.40 Million Head 1998 Lamb Crop to Reach 4.87 Million Head All sheep and lamb inventory in the United States on July 1, 1998, totaled 9.40 million head, 5 percent below July 1, 1997. Breeding sheep inventory declined to 5.58 million head on July 1, 1998, 3 percent below July 1997. Market sheep and lambs (including newborn lambs), at 3.83 million head, were 7 percent below last July. Of the July 1, 1998 breeding herd, 4.56 million head were ewes one year old and older, 220,000 head were rams one year old and older, and 800,000 head were replacement lambs (including newborn lambs). Region 2 (NM & TX) accounted for 22.6 percent, Region 1 (AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, & WA) for 16.5 percent, Region 4 (IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, & OK) for 14.6 percent, and Region 5 (all other states) accounted for 12.9 percent. The 1998 Lamb Crop in the United States is expected to total 4.87 million head, down 7 percent from the 1997 lamb crop of 5.24 million head. Lambs born during January through June 1998 reached 4.25 million head or 87 percent of the yearly total. An additional 620,000 head are expected to be born during the period July through December 1998.
