Catfish Value of Sales Up 3 Percent from 1998 Catfish growers in the 13 selected States had sales of 488 million dollars during 1999, up 3 percent from the previous year. The top four States, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas, and Louisiana accounted for 96 percent of the U. S. total sales. Nationwide sales of all foodsize fish increased 4 percent from 1998 to 464 million dollars. Fingerlings and fry sales totaled 18.5 million dollars, a decrease of 10 percent from 1998. Sales of stockers totaled 3.64 million dollars in 1999, down from the 7.89 million dollars sold the previous year. By point of first sale, direct sales to processors accounted for 95 percent of the total sales of foodsize fish while 78 percent of the stocker sales were to other producers. The remainder were sold for recreational use, to live haulers, or for retail, government, or other uses. Water Acres Up 5 Percent The water surface acres being used for catfish production as of January 1, 2000, totaled 189,000 acres, up 5 percent from a year earlier. Of the total acres, 6,090 are to be renovated during the period of January 1, 2000 to June 30, 2000. An additional 3,880 acres are under construction or expected to be constructed and in use by July 1, 2000. During the period of July 1, 1999 through December 31, 1999, 3,900 acres were taken out of production. As of January 1, 2000, 152,480 acres were being used for foodfish production, 24,450 acres were being used for fingerling production, and 6,265 acres were being used for broodfish. Inventory Numbers Catfish producers had 1.36 million broodfish on hand January 1, 2000, up 17 percent from January 1, 1999. Large foodsize fish (over 3 pounds per fish) on hand totaled 5.88 million on January 1, 2000, down 36 percent in comparable states from a year ago. The number of medium foodsize (1.50 pounds to 3 pounds per fish) increased 18 percent to 74.5 million, and small foodsize fish (0.75 pound to 1.50 pounds per fish) numbers increased 14 percent to 208 million. The number of large stockers ((over 180 pounds to 750 pounds) per 1000 fish) on hand January 1, 2000, at 358 million, were up 35 percent from the previous year. Small stocker ((over 60 pounds to 180 pounds) per 1000 fish) numbers increased 5 percent to 434 million. There were 1.10 billion fingerlings on hand January 1, 2000, up 12 percent from January 1, 1999. Trout Value of Sales Increased 4 Percent from 1998 The total value of all sales, both fish and eggs, received by trout growers in the 20 selected States reached 76.9 million dollars during 1999, an increase of 4 percent from 1998. The State of Idaho had almost half the total value. For the Nation, sales of fish totaled 72.0 million dollars for 1999, while egg sales totaled 4.93 million dollars. 12" and Longer Trout Sales The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 1999 totaled 61.0 million fish, up 6 percent from the previous year. The value of sales for the 1999 marketing year was 65.0 million dollars, up 8 percent from 1998. Based on the dollar value, 64 percent were sold to processors and 19 percent were sold to fee and recreational fishing establishments. 6"-12" Trout Sales The number of 6"-12" trout sold during 1999 totaled 7.0 million fish, a decline of 27 percent from 1998. The average value per pound was $2.52 during 1999, up 22 cents from the 1998 price. The total value of stocker sales was 5.63 million dollars during 1999, down 26 percent from the previous year. The major sales outlet for 6"-12" trout was to fee and recreational fishing establishments with 57 percent of the total sales, followed by other producers with 16 percent, and live haulers with 13 percent. Fingerling Sales Number of fingerlings sold during 1999 totaled 9.94 million trout, a 60 percent increase from the previous year. The average value per 1,000 fish was $142.00 during 1999, down $1.00 from 1998. The total value of fingerling sales was 1.41 million dollars, up 59 percent from last year's total. Trout Egg Sales Trout egg sales in 1999 totaled 311 million eggs, down 9 percent from 343 million eggs sold during the previous year. The average value per 1,000 eggs during 1999 was $15.80 up 70 cents from 1998. The total value of trout egg sales during 1999 was 4.93 million dollars, down 5 percent from the 5.19 million dollars in egg sales during the previous year. Losses of Fish Total losses of all trout were 33.8 million fish during 1999, with 73 percent being lost to disease, 19 percent lost to predators, and 4 percent to drought. Distributed Trout Trout distributed for restoration or conservation purposes primarily by State and Federal hatcheries included 3.78 million 12" or longer fish, 56.6 million 6"-12", and 74.3 million fingerlings. The estimated value of fish and eggs distributed totaled 63.4 million dollars. Losses to trout raised for distribution were primarily due to disease (64 percent) and predators (25 percent). Methodology and Definitions Survey Procedures: All known catfish and trout operators and trout hatcheries were contacted during the first half of January by mail, telephone, and personal interview. Estimation Procedures: Sound statistical methodology was employed to derive the estimates from reported data. All data were analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation were compared to their own past operating profile and to trends of similar operations. Data for missing operations were estimated based on similar operations or historical data. Reliability: Catfish and trout production estimates are based on a census of all known active producers and, therefore, have no sampling variability. However, estimates may be subject to errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing of the data. These errors are minimized through strict quality controls in the edit and summarization process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Revision policy: Estimates for the previous year are subject to revision when current estimates are made. Revisions are the result of late or corrected data. Comparison with the Census of Aquaculture: The 1998 Census of Aquaculture presented totals of individual reports with no rounding or allowance for incompleteness. Amounts and values were totaled with the sums being published. The numbers in this report may differ due to rounding amounts and prices, new operations being surveyed that were not surveyed for the Census, and values being derived by multiplying the amount times price. Definitions Used for Catfish Production: Broodfish - Fish kept for egg production, including males. Broodfish produce the fertilized eggs which go to hatcheries. The most desirable size is 3 to 10 pounds or 4 to 6 years of age. Large Foodsize - Fish weighing over 3 pounds. Medium Foodsize - Fish weighing over one and one-half pounds to 3 pounds. Small Foodsize - Fish weighing over three-fourths pound to one and one-half pounds. Large Stockers - Fish weighing over 180 pounds to 750 pounds per 1,000 fish. Small Stockers - Fish weighing over 60 pounds to 180 pounds per 1,000 fish. Fingerlings/Fry - Fish weighing 60 pounds per 1,000 fish and less. Definitions Used for Trout Production: 12" or Longer Fish: Grown commercially for food, usually weighing from three-fourths to one and one-half pounds. 6"-12" Fish: Usually stockers that weigh less than three-fourths of a pound. Fingerlings: Fish usually from 1 to 6 inches long. Live Haulers: Person who buys live fish on the farm and functions as a middleman. Terms Used for Losses: Disease: Includes losses from both parasitic and bacterial caused sickness. Theft/Vandalism: The unauthorized removal of fish and/or the destruction of property causing a loss of fish by intentional acts of persons known or unknown. Chemicals: Includes losses from pesticides or herbicide poisoning. Drought: Includes losses from lack of water causing oxygen depletion. Floods: Includes losses from too much water washing the fish away. Predators: Includes losses from mink, otters, birds, and other animals. The next "Catfish Production" report will be released at 3 p.m. ET on July 31, 2000. The next "Catfish and Trout Production" report will be released in February 2001.
