United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Agricultural Statistics Board Statistical Bulletin Number 910 Poultry Production and Value Final Estimates 1988-93 Poultry Production and Value: Final Estimates for 1988-1993. Agricultural Statistics Board, National Agricultural Statistics Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Abstract This publication presents final production and value estimates for broilers, eggs, turkeys, and chickens made by the Agricultural Statistics Board for the period 1988-93, including some revisions. Data on poultry production and value continue the official series published in Statistical Bulletin No. 806 issued April 1990. Estimates contained in this publication provide a historic record and benchmark for current estimates. Introduction Production and value estimates for broilers, eggs, turkeys, and chickens were published annually in "Poultry Production and Value" during the 1988 through 1993 period. Revisions were made only after a thorough review of original data with consideration given to all additional data now available, including the 1992 Census of Agriculture. Any revisions of inventory numbers normally required corresponding adjustments to other items. Descriptions of the various items in this publication are as follows: Broilers Produced: Estimates cover the 12-month period from December 1 the previous year through November 30. Estimates are based primarily on broiler-type chicks placed for meat production during October 1 the previous year through September 30. Broiler-type chicks are a domestic breed of chickens with the primary purpose of meat production, including broilers, capons, cornish, fryers, and roasters. Estimates exclude egg-type chicks. Eggs Produced: Annual estimates of egg production include both table and hatching eggs. Estimates cover the 12-month period from December 1 the previous year through November 30. Chickens Lost and Sold: Estimates of chickens lost and sold are from monthly and quarterly survey questionnaires sent to egg producers. Producers reported the number of layers died and destroyed for any reason and number sold for the preceding month. Estimates of chickens sold are checked against data from the commercial slaughter of mature chickens. Turkeys Raised: Estimates are based primarily on poults placed on farms for commercial production from September 1 the previous year through August 31. Estimates include the number of young turkeys for meat production plus the number entering breeding flocks during the calendar year. Young turkeys lost and day old poults exported are excluded, while poults imported into the U.S. are included. Prices: Marketing year average prices per pound of chickens, broilers, and per dozen eggs are computed from monthly prices received by producers, weighted by the estimated quantities sold each month. Egg prices are from all sales, both hatching and table eggs, including table eggs sold retail by producers. Value of Production: Value of production for chickens is computed by multiplying quantities sold by the marketing year average price. Value of production for broilers and turkeys is derived by multiplying pounds produced by price per pound. Value of production for eggs is derived by multiplying eggs produced by price per dozen and dividing by 12. For the United States, the total value of production is the sum of State estimates. Price per unit is derived by dividing the total value by the total pounds produced. For information call Joel Moore at (202) 720-3244. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.
