United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Pot 6 (99) Potatoes 1998 Summary September 1999 Potatoes This publication presents final 1998 potato estimates of acreage, yield per acre, production, farm disposition, season average price, value, and utilization of sales including processing with historic comparisons. First of the month (December through June) stocks of potatoes for the 15 major fall producing States are also included. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. These final estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments, Federal-State inspections, and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by seasonal group according to the period (quarter) when the largest supplies are harvested. The four seasonal groups are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July through September Fall September through November A crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because of overlapping of harvest before or after the specified season. Generally, the marketing season closely follows harvest except for fall potatoes when marketing from storage may extend through August of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is from the start of harvest through August of the following year. New This Year: Potato stocks reports are now being extended to June 1. Monthly processing by the 8 major States are also included. Monthly reports of shrinkage and loss for the 15 stocks States will provide data on the quality of the crop. Second Largest Potato Production; Value Up Slightly Total 1998 potato production is estimated at 476 million cwt, up 2 percent from 1997 but 5 percent below the record high in 1996. Harvested area, at 1.39 million acres, was up 3 percent from 1997 but 3 percent below 1996. The average yield of 343 cwt per acre was down 2 cwt from 1997 and 7 cwt below 1996. Seasonal production was below last year for winter and spring, while summer and fall potatoes were above the previous year. Winter production fell 13 percent, spring decreased 5 percent, summer increased 4 percent, and fall potatoes gained 2 percent. This is the second largest potato production on record in the United States. Summer potato production was revised to 18.9 million cwt for 1998, up 4 percent from 1997 but 1 percent below 1996. Harvested area of 68,100 acres gained 5 percent from 1997, while the average yield of 278 cwt per acre was down 2 cwt from a year earlier. Fall potatoes were finalized at 433 million cwt, up 2 percent from 1997 but 5 percent below the 1996 record. This is the second largest fall potato production in the United States. Area harvested in 1998 was estimated at 1.21 million acres, up 2 percent from 1997 but 3 percent below two years ago. The average yield, at 356 cwt per acre, was down 1 cwt from 1996. Final production of fall potatoes was 1 percent above the first forecast made in November 1998. Value of all potato production was estimated at $2.63 billion, up fractionally from last year and 9 percent above 1996. The average price, at $5.56 per cwt lost 8 cents from a year earlier but was 65 cents above 1996. Sales from the 1998 potato crop totaled 435 million cwt, up 1 percent from 1997 but 4 percent below 1996. Sales accounted for 90.8 percent of 1998 production. Non sales accounted for 41.2 million cwt of 1998 potatoes, up 9 percent from 1997 but 14 percent below 1996. Over the past five years, an average of 90.7 percent of the potatoes produced have been sold. The other 9.3 percent was either lost (shrinkage and loss) or used for seed, home use, and livestock feed on farms where grown. Processors used 282 million cwt of raw potatoes from the 1998 crop, up 5 percent from 1997 but less than 1 percent below 1996. Table stock sales totaled 124 million cwt, 5 percent below last year. Seed sales of 25.1 million cwt were down 3 percent. Sales for livestock feed, at 3.11 million cwt, down 14 percent from 1997 and 74 percent below the 1996 diversion-enhanced program. Chip potato use totaled 50.5 million cwt, 5 percent above last year. Freezers took 169 million cwt of raw potatoes, up 3 percent, while dehydrating jumped 15 percent to a record high 55.5 million cwt. Canning use, at 5.04 million cwt, was down 8 percent. Starch, flour and other products were made from 1.63 million cwt of potatoes, up 25 percent from last year. Shrinkage and loss was estimated at 35.5 million cwt, up 10 percent from last year but 14 percent less than 1996. Livestock feed and home use totaled 1.36 million cwt, up 4 percent. Growers kept an additional 4.41 million cwt for seed on their own farms, a gain of 6 percent from the previous year.
