Pot 6 (97)a Potatoes 1996 Summary Potatoes This publication presents final 1996 estimates of acreage, yield per acre, production, farm disposition, season average price, value, and utilization of sales including processing with historic comparisons. First of the month (December through May) stocks of potatoes for the 15 major fall producing States are also included. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. In 1995, summer estimates in Michigan and Minnesota were combined with fall potatoes. This report shows 1994 summer estimates of acreage, yield, and production combined under the fall season for comparative purposes for these two States. Sub-State estimates were dropped from New York's program in 1995. These final estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments and unloads, Federal-State inspections, and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by seasonal group according to the period when the largest supplies are usually harvested. The four seasonal groups are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July through September Fall September through November Crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because there is some overlapping of harvest before or after the specified season. Generally, the marketing season closely follows the harvesting season except for the fall crop when marketing from storage may extend through July of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is generally from the start of harvest through July of the following year. Record Large Potato Production; Value Off Sharply Total 1996 potato production is estimated at a record large 499 million cwt, up 12 percent from 1995 and 7 percent above the previous record in 1994. Harvested area, at 1.43 million acres, gained 4 percent from 1995 was 3 percent above 1994. The average yield of 350 cwt per acre was also record high, 27 cwt above 1995 and 11 cwt above 1994. In 1996, all seasonal groups increased in production from the previous year: Winter jumped 32 percent; spring increased 11 percent; summer rose 9 percent; and fall potatoes gained 13 percent. Summer potato production was revised to 19.5 million cwt in 1996, up 9 percent from 1995 and 12 percent above comparable totals in 1994. Harvested area of 74,800 acres increased 6 percent from 1995, while the average yield of 261 cwt per acre gained 7 cwt from a year earlier. The revised production estimate places the summer potato crop 3 percent above the July 1996 forecast. Fall potatoes were finalized at a record large 453 million cwt, 13 percent above 1995 and 7 percent above 1994. This is the sixth record large production of fall potatoes in the United States in the last seven years. Area harvested in 1996 was estimated at 1.25 million acres, up 3 percent from the last two years. The average yield, at 364 cwt per acre, gained 30 cwt from 1995. The final production of fall potatoes is 1 percent above the first forecast made in November 1996. Planting started late, but good weather in June led to high production in many States. Record large potato crops were produced in Idaho, Washington, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Colorado. Value of all potato production was estimated at $2.43 billion, a 19 percent drop from the record high value in 1995 and the lowest value since 1992. The average price dropped to $4.93 per cwt compared with $6.77 in 1995 and $5.58 in 1994. This was the lowest average price since 1987. Sales from the 1996 potato crop totaled a record large 451 million cwt, up 10 percent from 1995 and 6 percent above 1994. Non sales accounted for 47.5 million cwt of 1996 potatoes, 35 percent above the previous year and 10 percent above 1994. Over the past 5 years, an average of 91 percent of the potatoes produced have been sold. The other 9 percent was either lost (shrinkage and loss) or used for seed, home use, and livestock feed on farms where grown. In the 1996 season, farmers sold 90.5 percent of their crop and kept or lost 9.5 percent. Processors used a record large 283 million cwt of raw potatoes from the 1996 crop, up 11 percent from 1995 and 8 percent above 1994. Table stock sales totaled 131 million cwt, up 6 percent from last year. Seed sales of 24.3 million cwt were down 6 percent. Sales for livestock feed, at 12.1 million cwt, almost quadrupled from 1995 and included about 7 million cwt diverted under a Government program. Chip potato use totaled 48.0 million cwt, up 1 percent from a year earlier. Freezers took a record 174 million cwt of raw potatoes, a gain of 12 percent, while dehydrating claimed a record high 54.3 million cwt, up 20 percent. Canning use totaled 5.04 million cwt, off 12 percent. Starch, flour and other products were made from 1.96 million cwt of potatoes, up 17 percent. Shrinkage and loss was estimated at 41.2 million cwt, the highest since 1985 and 40 percent above 1995. Livestock feed and home use totaled 1.54 million cwt, up 60 percent. Growers kept 4.69 million cwt for seed on their own farms, down 2 percent from the previous year.
