Also included are first of the month potato stocks (December through June) for the 13 major fall potato producing States. Monthly prices, farm marketings, percent of acreage planted by type, and certified seed acres are also included for selected States. Production, disposition, and value data for Alaska are shown separately. These estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, processors, and cooperating State or Federal Agencies. The various sources include: Market News Service rail and truck shipments, Federal-State inspections, and miscellaneous data available through marketing programs. Price estimates represent average returns to growers for all uses and for all methods of sale. These prices are applied to total production to compute value of production and to the quantity sold to compute value of sales. Some unsold potatoes contribute to the value of production, including farm use for seed, feed, home use, and loss. The United States season average price is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold. Potato production, utilization, and value of sales in each State have been classified by season according to the period when the largest supplies are harvested. The four seasons are as follows: Season Usual Time of Harvest Winter January through March Spring April through June Summer July to Mid-September Fall August through November A crop year is associated with the calendar year in which harvest is accomplished. Seasons are not fixed dates but are approximations because of overlapping harvests. Generally, the marketing season closely follows harvest except for fall potatoes, when marketing from storage may extend through August of the following year. Thus, the marketing year for fall potatoes is from the start of harvest through August of the following year. 2012 Potato Production Up 8 Percent Potato production in 2012 is revised to 463 million cwt, down slightly from the estimate in the January Crop Production 2012 Summary but 8 percent above the 2011 crop. Harvested area, at 1.13 million acres, is up 5 percent from 2011. The average yield of 409 cwt per acre is up 10 cwt from the previous year. Spring potato final production for 2012 is 26.7 million cwt, 5 percent above the previous year. Harvested acres, at 94,600 acres, increased 3 percent from 2011. The average yield for spring potatoes is 283 cwt per acre, up 4 cwt from 2011. Summer potato production is 18.1 million cwt for 2012, a 40 percent increase from 2011. Harvested area, at 48,500 acres, is up 5 percent from 2011. The average yield of 373 cwt per acre is up 93 cwt from 2011. Fall potato production is finalized at 418 million cwt for 2012, up 7 percent from the 2011 crop. Area harvested in 2012 is 988,800 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year. The average fall potato yield, at 423 cwt per acre, was up 7 cwt from 2011. The value of all potatoes sold in 2012, at $3.73 billion, decreased slightly from the previous year. The average price, at $8.65 per cwt, is down $0.76 from 2011. The quantity of potatoes sold from the 2012 crop totaled 430 million cwt, up 8 percent from 2011. Sales account for 93 percent of 2012 production, unchanged from the previous year. Processors used 283 million cwt of raw potatoes from the 2012 crop, up 4 percent from 2011. Table stock sales totaled 119 million cwt, 15 percent above the previous year. Seed sales of 23.7 million cwt are up 8 percent from 2011. Sales for livestock feed, at 4.08 million cwt, increased significantly from 2011. Potatoes used for chips and shoestrings totaled 56.3 million cwt in 2012, down 4 percent from the previous year. Frozen french fries and other frozen products utilized 166 million cwt of raw potatoes, up 4 percent from 2011. Potatoes used for dehydrating totaled 50.6 million cwt, up 11 percent from 2011. Canning use, at 2.46 million cwt, is up slightly from the previous year. Starch, flour, and other products were made from 8.03 million cwt of potatoes, a 34 percent increase from 2011. Shrinkage and loss is estimated at 28.4 million cwt for 2012, 2 percent above 2011. Potatoes used for livestock feed on farms where grown and home use totaled 1.58 million cwt, and increased significantly from the previous season. Growers kept 3.29 million cwt for seed on their own farms, up 9 percent from 2011. (S) Insufficient number of reports to establish an estimate. Statistical Methodology Survey Procedures: Potato estimates are the results of a variety of surveys. Summer and fall potatoes are included in the June and December Quarterly Agricultural Surveys, but also follow Grower Special Surveys. For winter and spring potatoes, Grower Special Surveys are the only source of data available. Telephone follow-up of mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Special grower disposition surveys are conducted at the end of each season to provide additional details about the crop. Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the special grower disposition surveys along with federal administrative data is used to establish estimates of acreage, production, amount sold, and usage on farm where grown. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates. Revision Policy: All estimates for the previous crop year can be revised at this time. However, acreage is rarely updated. End-of-season estimates of production are made following harvest and are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data. Reliability: Survey results are subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
