MD_DA811 Cheese - Foreign Type Report 34 - Released on August 24, 2022 Retail demand for European style cheese is growing as the summer holidays end. However, shoppers are becoming more interested in store brands and discounted varieties in lieu of specialty items. Many shoppers are trying to control their grocery bills and thwart the impacts of inflation. Food service cheese demand is stable but shifting from the prime tourism regions back to neighborhood restaurants. In some cases, restaurants and cheese outlets are facing some of the same labor issues that production facilities face, attracting enough workers and keeping them healthy. Cheese production is active, but only as much as tight milk supplies and worker availability allows. European cheese inventories are tight. Some industry contacts worry that cheese supplies may tighten further through the fall and winter months as milk volumes continue the seasonal decline and are kept low with limited feed availability and elevated milk production costs. FOREIGN TYPE CHEESE WHOLESALE PRICE ADJUSTMENTS United States domestic cheese prices increased $.0500 for blue, gorgonzola, parmesan and romano. All other prices are unchanged.
