This is the largest acreage since 1990. Planting began last August in the Plains, parts of Utah, and in Washington. About 98 percent of the U.S. acreage was seeded by December 1. Soft Red Winter wheat totals 11.5 million acres, up 10 percent from last year. Generally good seeding conditions were enjoyed from Arkansas up through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Missouri's acreage increased the most from last year; Ohio's total is the largest planting since 1982. White Winter seedings are 4.64 million acres, up 6 percent from a year ago. High prices and ideal conditions fostered Idaho's increase. Washington's crop was seeded ahead of average and is rated in mostly good to excellent condition. Good early fall weather allowed the Michigan seeding to progress ahead of normal. Hard Red Winter wheat, at 35.8 million acres, is also up 6 percent from 1995 mainly due to jumps in Montana and South Dakota. Seeding of Hard Red was generally slowed by dryness in the Plains, except in Oklahoma, where September wetness delayed the start. The Montana total is a return to more normal acreage levels; seeding into last spring's idled acres was common in South Dakota. The dry conditions may have prevented some Kansas planting, and has curtailed grazing in Oklahoma and the Texas High Plains. Durum Wheat: Growers in Arizona and California have seeded or intend to seed 205,000 acres for harvest this summer. If realized, this total would be up 21 percent from the 1995 final planting. A late cotton harvest had small grain seeding trailing average progress. California's Durum seeding progressed rapidly under ideal conditions and was virtually complete in the San Joaquin Valley by December 1. Imperial Valley planting will continue through February. Rye: Area for 1996 totals 1.54 million acres, down 5 percent from 1995. Kansas and Texas declines account for most of the drop in acreage.
