United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Fr Nt 3-1 (00) Citrus Fruits 2000 Summary September 2000 Citrus Production Rebounds From Previous Season Citrus production for the 1999-00 season totaled 17.4 million tons, up 28 percent from the weather-damaged season of 1998-99. The production is the second highest, surpassed only by the 1997-98 production of 17.8 million tons. Florida total citrus utilization increased by 23 percent. California produced 58 percent more citrus than the freeze-damaged 1998-99 crop. Florida accounted for 76 percent of the total U.S. citrus production, California totaled 21 percent, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 3 percent. Florida's orange production of 233 million boxes was up 25 percent from the previous season. A higher number of fruit per tree compared to the previous season and a lower than average drop contributed to the larger crop. Florida's grapefruit utilization of 53.4 million boxes was up 13 percent from last season's utilization, despite a 2 percent reduction in bearing acreage. Fruit per tree increased considerably from the year before. Florida's total citrus utilization was 2 percent less than the record large 1997-98 season. In California, citrus production rebounded from the December 1998 freeze that damaged the citrus crops in the Central Valley. All orange production in California totaled 67.0 million boxes, 86 percent higher than the previous season, but 3 percent less than the production from two seasons ago. Grapefruit production, at 7.00 million boxes, was down 4 percent from the previous season. Smaller than normal fruit size limited total production. Texas orange production increased 22 percent from a year ago, but grapefruit production dropped by 3 percent. Arizona's total citrus production was 11 percent less than the previous season. A 10 percent decrease in lemon utilization was the main contributor to the decline. The value of the 1999-00 U.S. citrus crop increased 7 percent from last season to $2.64 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). This represents the second highest value of production, surpassed only by the 1988-89 season valued at $2.66 billion. Total value of production was higher for all types of citrus, except for tangelos, tangerines, and Temples. Orange value of production increased 3 percent from a year ago. California fresh orange prices were less than half of what they were the previous season and processing prices in Florida were 15 percent less than in the 1998-99 season. However, the increased production more than offset the lower prices to help increase the crop value. California and Florida values of orange production increased 3 and 4 percent, respectively. The total value of the U.S. grapefruit crop was up 24 percent from last year due primarily to Florida processed prices which were 72 percent higher than the previous season. A 16 percent increase in lemon production and slightly higher lemon prices led to a 22 percent increase in the value of lemons. Tangerine value of production dropped 4 percent from last season, despite the record large production. The all tangerine price dropped by 30 percent from the previous season. The revised production and utilization estimates were based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for the 1999-00 California Valencia oranges and grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing seasons were not complete for these commodities at publication time. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = sum (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) divided by sum (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = sum (State Process Value * State Box Weight) divided by sum (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = sum (State All Value * State Box Weight) divided by sum (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of all states values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
