United States Department of Agriculture Citrus Fruits 1998 Summary September 1998 National Agricultural Statistics Service Fr Nt 3-1(98) Record Large Citrus Production in 1997-98 Citrus production for the 1997-98 season totaled a record large 18.0 million tons, 5 percent higher than the previous record of 17.2 million tons produced last season and 15 percent higher than the 1995-96 season. Record orange production in Florida contributed to most of the record total citrus production. Florida accounted for 75 percent of the U.S. citrus production, California totaled 22 percent, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 3 percent. Florida's orange production of 244 million boxes was 8 percent above the previous year's record large crop. The 11 percent yield increase, partially offset by the 3 percent decrease in bearing acreage, contributed to the record large production. Florida's grapefruit utilization of 49.6 million boxes was down 11 percent from last season's record large utilization. Decreased bearing acreage of 8 percent and a 3 percent yield decrease led to the drop in utilization. Florida's total citrus utilization was up 3 percent from last year and up 15 percent from the 1995-96 season. In California, orange production was up 16 percent and grapefruit production increased 10 percent from the 1996-97 season. California's 1997-98 total citrus production was up 10 percent from the previous season and up 20 percent from two years ago. Orange and grapefruit acreage in Texas continued to rebound from the December 1989 freeze. Orange production increased 7 percent from a year ago, but grapefruit production was down 9 percent. Arizona's total citrus production was virtually unchanged from a year ago. Value of Citrus Crop Increases in 1997-98 The value of the 1997-98 U.S. citrus crop increased 1 percent from last season to $2.60 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). Total value of production was higher for Valencia oranges and limes, but was lower for Navel and early- midseason oranges, grapefruit, K-Early Citrus, lemons, tangelos, tangerines and Temples. Despite lower orange prices in each state, the value of orange production increased due to the record large crop. The total value of the U.S. grapefruit crop was down 17 percent from last year due to lower grapefruit prices in Florida. Lemon prices decreased more than $2.00 per box, leading to a 20 percent decrease in the value of production. Tangerine value of production was down 19 percent from last season, with price decreases in Arizona and California more than offsetting a price increase in Florida. The revised production and utilization estimates were based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for the 1997-98 California Valencia oranges and grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing season was not complete at publication time. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = (State Process Value * State Box Weight) (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = (State All Value * State Box Weight) (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the state's values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
