HDR1012000140030922951500Citrus Fruits HDR2012000140030922951500Citrus Fruits Narrative Citrus Production 10 Percent Higher in 1994-95 Citrus production for the 1994-95 season totaled 16.0 million tons, 10 percent more than the previous season and 5 percent higher than the 1992-93 season. The 1994-95 crop is the second largest on record due primarily to Florida's near record high orange production and record high grapefruit production. Florida orange production was up 18 percent from last year's crop. A combination of increased yield per acre and a 10 percent increase in orange bearing acreage resulted in the second largest orange crop on record for Florida. Orange production in California was down 4 percent from last season. Orange acreage increased 3 percent in California but yield per acre continued its downward trend. The California Navel orange crop was down 4 percent from last year's crop. Texas orange and grapefruit acreage and production continued to increase from the December 1989 freeze. Arizona orange and grapefruit acreage and production were down from a year ago. In the 1994-95 season, Florida accounted for 75 percent of the U.S. citrus production, California produced 22 percent, Arizona's output equaled 2 percent, and Texas accounted for 1 percent. Value of Citrus Crop Increases The value of the 1994-95 U.S. citrus crop increased slightly from last season to $2.26 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). Increased supplies from the large crop resulted in lower prices for all citrus crops except lemons and tangerines. Total citrus crop values were up in every state except Arizona. U.S. average prices for early, midseason, and Navel oranges decreased 16 percent to $5.26 per box. Valencia orange prices decreased 1 percent to $6.44 per box. Grapefruit prices were down 15 percent at the U.S. level to $4.18 per box. Lemon prices, up 11 percent from last season, averaged $11.02 per box. The revised production and utilization estimates in this report are based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, processor records, etc. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for 1994-95 California Valencia oranges and California grapefruit are preliminary as records are not complete for the marketing season. Marketing Year Average Prices and Value of Production State level marketing year average (MYA), or price per box, for fresh and processed sales are the weighted average of monthly sales that occur during a crop's marketing season, adjusted to the packinghouse-door level. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = (State Process Value * State Box Weight) (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = (State All Value * State Box Weight) (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) These formulas are also applicable to the calculation of the California all grapefruit MYA's prior to the 1993-94 season to weight the desert valley and other areas prices. For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of states' values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the states' values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
