United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Agricultural Statistics Board Statistical Bulletin Number 895 Farms and Land in Farms Final Estimates 1988-92 Farms and Land in Farms: Final Estimates by State, 1988-92. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Statistics Board, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Statistical Bulletin No. 895. Abstract This report presents final State and National estimates of total number of farms and land in farms for 1988-1992. In addition, it contains estimates of farms and land in farms by economic sales class. Some of these estimates have been revised since last published in Agricultural Statistics Board releases. The basis for these revisions are the Department of Commerce 1992 Census of Agriculture and any other new information available which might affect the level of the estimates. Estimates contained in this report provide a historical record and a benchmark for current estimates. The data series covering the 1993-95 period appears in the July FARMS AND LAND IN FARMS report released July 28 at 3:00 p.m. EDT. These data are a continuation of a series which began in 1910. The entire data series of estimates for farms and land in farms is contained in the following publications: Statistical Bulletin No. 316 released in June 1962 covering number of farms estimates for 1910-59 and land in farms estimates for 1950-59, Statistical Bulletin No. 507 released in January 1973 covering estimates for 1959-70, Statistical Bulletin No. 594 released in December 1977 covering estimates for 1969-75, SpSy3 released in December 1980 covering estimates for 1975-80, and SpSy5 released in August 1989 covering estimates for 1979-87. Washington D.C., 20250 July 1995 Introduction Number of farms and land in farms estimates are published annually. Data are collected by the National Agricultural Statistics Service during the first two weeks of June from a sample of farm operators across the Nation. A probability based survey is used. Survey procedures ensure that all farm operators meeting the definition of a farm on June 1 had a chance to be included in the survey. A farm is defined as "any establishment from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were sold or would normally be sold during the year". Government payments are included in sales and places with their acreage enrolled in set aside or other government programs are considered operating. Land in farms excludes public, industrial, and grazing association land and nonagricultural land. Survey estimates are subject to sampling errors because a complete census is not taken. The sampling error measures the variation in estimates from the average of all possible samples. This variability, as measured by the relative standard error, is about 1 percent for U.S. number of farms and 2 percent for land in farms. This means for number of farms that chances are approximately 95 out of 100 that a survey estimate will be within 2 percent of the complete coverage value if the same procedures are used to survey all operators. Survey results are also subject to nonsampling errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. The effects of these errors cannot be measured directly. Special efforts are taken at each step of the survey to minimize nonsampling errors. Farm number information is subject to revision the year following initial publication and following review of the five year Census of Agriculture data published by the Department of Commerce. There are some differences between the data series because of definition and coverage adjustment. A further discussion of this subject is documented in an August 1995 paper by Vogel and Milton, titled "The Farm Definition, A Statistician's Perspective".
