QA_LS155 New Holland, PA Mon Dec 03, 2018 USDA-Ag Market News Pennsylvania Weekly Livestock Summary for week ending Fri, November 30, 2018. Combined Livestock Receipts from Carlisle, Dewart, Greencastle, New Holland, Middleburg, and Vintage. This Week Last Week Year Ago Slaughter Cattle: 3954 3917 3900 Feeder Cattle: N/A N/A N/A Feeder Holstein Calves: 2972 2320 3345 Slaughter Hogs: 712 646 591 Feeder Pigs: N/A 58 N/A Slaughter Lambs/Sheep: 3153 3122 2704 Slaughter Goats: 1705 2580 1869 All Livestock: 12,496 12,643 12,409 Across Pennsylvania this week, we have talked a lot lately about the slaughter cow market. That is the main topic not only because of the price for cows but the effect it has on other factors as well. Our primary cow is Holstein and our cow market is based off of that one breed. The effect of a price drop in slaughter cows impacts replacement costs as well. When you take beef buyers out of the replacement sale then you see a significant price drop there also. Replacement heifers aren't worth their initial cost so another hit for the dairy industry. When you figure milk prices, veal calf prices, replacement heifer sales, and feed costs there ain't much left for the dairyman. Pardon my grammer but there just ain't! Even steer feeders have it better with prices holding mostly steady and averaging above 100.00/cwt. Choice slaughter steers were quoted steady to 1.00 higher with very few markets quoted due to holiday last week. They averaged 106.81/cwt. Holstein steers were quoted 1.00-2.00 higher for the week with only two markets reporting Holstein steers. Choice Holstein steers averaged 80.62/cwt on a very light test. Slaughter heifers sold steady to 1.00 higher this week. Choice heifers averaged 104.13/cwt. Choice Boxed Beef gave back a little this week. It closed at 212.61/cwt or .86/cwt lower than last week. December futures closed at 116.92. February futures closed at 120.50. April futures closed at 122.00. Slaughter cows were quoted 1.00-4.00 higher for the week. Slaughter bulls were not quoted this week. The Holstein calf market is another delima. Prices haven't hit rock bottom yet but they are not far from it. We are seeing more and more "no bid" calves at every sale. This creates a situation where farmers are actually getting billed for calves they are sending to the sale. Holstein bull calves were quoted mixed from 10.00 lower to 20.00 higher. Holstein heifer calves were not quoted this week. There were no feeder cattle sales reported this week. At the New Holland Dairy sale this week, there was no trend reported due to reporters absence last week. No comparison on the hog market due to reporters absence last week. At New Holland Sheep and Goat sale, no trend available as sale was not reported last week. A majority of lambs on offer weighed over 80 lbs. This spurred demand for lighter lambs but demand could not keep up with supply in heavier weight breaks. All cattle are sold per cwt, with the exception of dairy replacement cattle which are sold by the head. All hogs and pigs are sold per cwt. All sheep and lambs are sold per cwt on their actual weights. All goats are sold by the head on estimated weights.
