Unseasonably warm weather was noted in several areas during the mid-week holiday, however a weekend weather system is forecasted to bring rain to the southern plains and large snow accumulations to areas of the northern plains. Negotiated cash cattle trade developed on Friday morning with dressed purchases in the northern plains trading mostly 3.00 higher at 195.00 with a few up to 196.00. Negotiated trade in Kansas was established on Friday afternoon with early live sales at 122.00. The estimated weekly cattle slaughter was reported at 468k. Actual Slaughter Under Federal Inspection for week ending December 14th showed steer weights down 4 lbs this week to 904 lbs; 12 lbs above a year ago. For the week, December CME Live Cattle contract were up 1.28 to settle at 123.50 with February up 0.90 settling at 126.70. January CME Feeder Cattle contract were up 1.28 on the week to settle at 145.55 and March contracts up 0.43 settling at 144.80. Cold Storage Report for November was released Monday with total red meat supplies in freezers down 2 percent from the previous month and up 2 percent from last year. Total pounds of beef in freezers were up 3 percent from the previous month and down 7 percent from last year. Frozen pork supplies were down 6 percent from the previous month and up 13 percent from last year with stocks of pork bellies up 14 percent from last month and up 40 percent from last year. On the week, Choice cutout closed 0.74 lower at 208.96 while Select was 3.54 higher at 204.57; putting the Choice-Select spread at 4.39.
