Puerto Rico - Various Agricultural Statistics 2011 Summary April 2012 ISSN: 2154-8692 United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Summary Milk production decreased 1 percent in 2011 to 645 million pounds. The rate per cow, at 8,377 pounds, was 44 pounds above 2010. The annual average number of milk cows on farms was 77 thousand head, down 1,000 head from 2010. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2011 totaled $217 million, up 22 percent from 2010. Producer returns averaged $34.00 per hundredweight, up from $27.60 in 2010. The quantity of milk marketed by producers in 2011 totaled 638 million pounds, down 5 million pounds from the total of 643 million pounds marketed in 2010. An estimated 7.0 million pounds of milk were used on farms where produced, unchanged from 2010. Calves were fed 71 percent of this milk, with the remainder consumed in producer households. Egg production increased 10 percent from 2010 to 147 million eggs. The average number of layers in Puerto Rico decreased 1 percent in 2011 to 588 thousand. The rate of lay for 2011 increased 12 percent from 2010. The value per dozen eggs rose to $1.12 in 2010, an increase of 4 cents from the 2010 price of $1.08. The value of production increased 14 percent in 2011 to $13.7 million. Coffee production for the 2010-2011 season is estimated at 12.0 million pounds (parchment basis), up 14 percent from the previous season. Harvested area is estimated at 38,000 acres, the same as last season. Red meat production decreased 4 percent in 2011 to 29.4 million pounds. Cattle slaughter for 2011 was 38.5 thousand head, down from 40.4 thousand head in 2010. Calf slaughter did not change at 4.9 thousand head. Hogs remained the largest number of head slaughtered at 41.6 thousand head, down 7 percent from 2010. Sheep and lamb slaughter remained the smallest group at 300 head.
