Puerto Rico - Various Agricultural Statistics 2010 Summary April 2011 ISSN: 2154-8692 United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Summary Milk production decreased 3.0 percent in 2010 to 650 million pounds. The rate per cow, at 8,125 pounds, was 46 pounds below 2009. The annual average number of milk cows on farms was 80 thousand head, down 2,000 head from 2009. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2010 totaled $177 million, down 3.0 percent from 2009. Producer returns averaged $27.60 per hundredweight, no change from 2009. The quantity of milk used and marketed by producers in 2010 totaled 643 million pounds, down 20 million pounds from the total of 663 million pounds marketed in 2009. An estimated 7.0 million pounds of milk were used on farms where produced, unchanged from 2009. Calves were fed 71 percent of this milk, with the remainder consumed in producer households. Egg production was unchanged from 2009 at 134 million eggs. The average number of layers in Puerto Rico decreased 5.3 percent in 2010 to 594 thousand. The rate of lay for 2010 increased 5.6 percent from 2009. The value per dozen eggs dropped to $1.32 in 2010, a decrease of 3 cents from 2009. The value of production decreased 1.5 percent in 2010 to $14.9 million. There were 573 thousand layers in Puerto Rico on December 1, 2009, down 6.8 percent from the previous year. The number of chickens lost totaled 108 thousand while the number of chickens slaughtered fell to 300,000 head. Total pounds slaughtered in Puerto Rico in 2010 equaled 1,185 thousand pounds, down 3.3 percent from a year ago. The value of sales from these birds decreased in 2010 to $391,000, down 7.1 percent from 2009. Red meat production increased 1.7 percent in 2010 to 30.7 million pounds. Cattle slaughter for 2010 was 40.4 thousand head, up from 39.5 thousand head in 2009. Calf slaughter dropped 5.6 percent to 4.9 thousand head. Hogs remained the largest number of head slaughtered at 44.8 thousand head, up 0.4 percent from 2009. Sheep and lamb slaughter decreased from 392 head to 347 head. Farm numbers were unchanged from previous year.
