Co St 1-1 (10-06) In-Shell Pecan Cold Storage Updates National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Released October 4, 2006, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. For information on "In-Shell Pecan Cold Storage Updates" call David Colwell at (202) 720-8784, office hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. On Tuesday, September 19, 2006, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) was contacted by a member of the Pecan industry regarding in-shell pecans in the Cold Storage report. It was discovered that some of the inventory of in-shell pecans were being double counted. The September 21, 2006 Cold Storage report reflected corrections to the in-shell pecan inventories as a result of new information. This incident prompted NASS to validate other cold storage facilities to determine if there were any other occurrences of double counting. On September 29, 2006, NASS completed the necessary contacts and verified that double counting of in-shell pecans was not occurring outside the reported incident. However, in the process of validation, NASS discovered a cold storage facility that was not previously reporting their in-shell pecan inventory on the Cold Storage report. The following table contains revisions to the 2006 in-shell pecan inventories based on information from the reported incident, as well as the addition of previously unreported inventories. The unreported inventory data was not available prior to the September 21, 2006 Cold Storage release. Therefore, the July and August 2006 inventory levels are revised from the original release of the September Cold Storage report. There will be no further revisions to 2005 in-shell pecan inventories. Estimates for 2006 are subject to revision during the normal Annual Summary report released in February of the following year. Minimal revisions are expected due to the publication of revisions at this time. 2006 In-Shell Pecans in Cold Storage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- : United States : West South Central Region 1/ :-------------------------------------------------------------- Month : Previous : Revision : Percent : Previous : Revision :Percent : : : Change : : : Change -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- : -- 1,000 Pounds -- Percent -- 1,000 Pounds -- Percent : Jan : 201,086 199,611 99 169,113 167,638 99 Feb : 208,808 207,616 99 178,394 177,202 99 Mar : 186,180 184,109 99 160,707 158,636 99 Apr : 167,319 164,427 98 144,131 141,239 98 May : 143,214 140,838 98 123,208 120,832 98 Jun : 127,754 125,796 98 109,767 107,809 98 Jul : 89,814 98,814 110 73,707 82,707 112 Aug : 61,998 70,298 113 50,322 58,621 116 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/ Mountain and West North Central regions combined with West South Central.
