Agaricus Mushrooms Agaricus mushroom sales totaled 838 million pounds, 1 percent below the 2000-2001 season and down 2 percent from 1999-2000. Pennsylvania accounted for 55 percent of the total volume of sales and second ranked California contributed 15 percent. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $875 million, up 6 percent from the 2000-2001 season. Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 92.9 million pounds, 11 percent of total Agaricus volume sold. The value of sales of the Brown mushroom crop for the 2001-02 season was $115 million, 13 percent of total Agaricus value. The number of Agaricus growers in the U.S. totaled 129, down 8 from last season and 18 below two seasons ago. Growers with sales exceeding 10 million pounds accounted for 63 percent of U.S. Agaricus production, or 532 million pounds. The volume of sales groups are as follows: over 20.0 million pounds, 11 growers; 10.0 million and 19.9 million pounds, 14 growers; 5.0 million to 9.9 million pounds, 24 growers; 2.5 million to 4.9 million pounds, 28 growers; 1.0 million to 2.4 million pounds, 26 growers; 0.5 million to 1.0 million pounds, 8 growers; less than 0.5 million pounds of sales, 18 growers. The growing area was 33.3 million square feet, virtually unchanged from the previous season but 10 percent below 1999-00. Total fillings was 146 million square feet, up 2 percent from last season but 3 percent below 1999-00. Yields averaged 5.73 pounds per square foot, down 0.15 pounds per square foot from 2000-2001. Producers received a record high average return of $5.98 per square foot, up 24 cents from last season and 51 cents above the previous record of $5.74 per square foot set during the 2000-01 season. U.S. fresh market production at 695 million pounds is virtually unchanged, while processed production, at 143 million pounds, is down 7 percent from 2000-01. U.S. fresh market production was 83 percent of total sales volume with processed making up the remaining 17 percent. For the 2002-03 crop, growers plan to increase their total fillings by 1 percent from the 2001-02 crop. Specialty Mushrooms - Shiitake, Oyster, and all Other Exotics Value of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 2001-02 was $37.0 million, down 12 percent from the 2000-2001 season. The average price per pound received by growers, at $2.77, is down 27 cents from the previous season. Sales of Shiitake mushrooms totaled 7.89 million pounds for the 2001-02 season, down 12 percent from the previous season.
