For example, if in a given State, part of the fresh mushrooms are sold F.O.B. packed by growers, part are sold bulk to brokers or repackers, and some are sold retail at roadside stands, the mushroom average price as sold is a weighted average of the average price for each method of sale. 2/ Fresh market, processing, and all sales estimates are primarily Agaricus, but also include specialty mushrooms through 1986-87. Statistics after 1986-87 are for Agaricus only. Agaricus Mushrooms Production of Agaricus mushrooms totaled 848 million pounds, up 5 percent from the1997-98 season and 9 percent above 1996-97. Pennsylvania accounted for half of the total volume of sales and California contributed 16 percent. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $829 million, compared with $774 million for the 1997-98 season. Total production of Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 50.1 million pounds, up 7 percent from 1997-98 and 53 percent higher than 1996-97. The value of the Brown mushroom crop for the 1998-99 season was $67.5 million, up 12 percent from last year and a 43 percent increase over 1996-97. The number of Agaricus growers in the U.S. totaled 150, down 6 from last season and 15 below two seasons ago. Of the 150 Agaricus mushrooms growers, 11 realized sales of more than 20 million pounds in the 1998-99 season. Growers with sales exceeding 10 million pounds accounted for 60 percent of U.S. Agaricus production, or 506 million pounds. The other sales groups are as follows: between 10.0 million and 19.9 million pounds, 14 growers; 5.0 million to 9.9 million pounds, 25 growers; 2.5 million to 4.9 million pounds, 26 growers; 1.0 million to 2.4 million pounds, 35 growers; 0.5 million to 1.0 million pounds, 13 growers; less than 0.5 million pounds of sales, 26 growers. The growing area reached 35.2 million square feet, 2 percent above both the previous year and 1996-97. Yields averaged 5.65 pounds per square foot, the second highest on record; the highest average yield was 5.69 pounds per square foot during the 1996-97 season. Producers received an average return of $5.52 per square foot, the highest on record. U.S. fresh market production was 77 percent of total sales volume with processed making up the remaining 23 percent, both unchanged from last year. For the1999-2000 crop, most growers plan to keep their total fillings unchanged from the 1998-99 crop. Specialty Mushrooms - Shiitake, Oyster, and all Other Exotics Volume of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 1998-99 was 13.0 million pounds, up 36 percent from the 1997-98 season and 21 percent above the 1996-97 season. A specialty grower is defined as having at least 200 natural wood logs in production or some commercial indoor growing area. The average price per pound received by growers, at $2.97, was 4 cents below last year. Sales of Shiitake mushrooms totaled 8.24 million pounds for the 1998-99 season, up 31 percent from last year. Price per pound received by growers, at $3.15, was unchanged from last season. Sales volume of Oyster mushrooms at 3.53 million pounds was 70 percent larger than the 1997-98 season. Sales of exotic mushrooms other than Shiitake or Oyster was 1.20 million pounds, up 3 percent from last season. The next "Mushrooms" report will be released in August 2000.
