National Hop Report ISSN: 2158-7825 Released December 18, 2019, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). 2019 Hop Production Up 5 Percent From Last Year Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2019 totaled a record high 112 million pounds, up 5 percent from the 2018 crop of 107 million pounds. Combined area harvested for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2019 totaled a record high 56,544 acres, up 3 percent from the 2018 level of 55,035 acres. Harvested acreage increased in Idaho and Washington, but declined in Oregon. The United States hop yield, at 1,981 pounds per acre, up 38 pounds from a year ago. Washington produced 73 percent of the United States hop crop for 2019; while Idaho accounted for 15 percent and Oregon accounted for 12 percent. CitraR, Cascade, Zeus, SimcoeR, C/T/ZR, and MosaicR were the six leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 50 percent of the State's hop production. In Idaho, C/T/ZR, MosaicR, Chinook, Zeus, CitraR, and Cascade were the major varieties, accounting for 65 percent of the State's hop production. In Oregon, Nugget, Cascade, CitraR, and Willamette were the major varieties, accounting for 50 percent of the State's hop production. The 2019 value of production for the United States totaled $637 million, up 9 percent from the previous year. Statistical Methodology Survey Procedures: Grower surveys are conducted in the three estimating States to collect acreage, yield, and production data from growers. Additionally, contacts are made with each of the three Hop Commissions. Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the hops growers surveys are used to establish estimates of hops. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates and industry check data. Revision Policy: All hop estimates are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data. Reliability: Survey results are subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication, imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
