wa-press-releases NATIONAL HOP REPORT December 18, 2003 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Hop Growers of America (HGA) has contracted with our agency to provide a statistical profile of the Hop industry for 2003. This includes acreage, yield, production, stocks, and price information. We are pleased to present the final 2003 acreage, yield, and production by variety and by states. In the past, these data have been released to the public in mid-January. We have been requested by HGA to release the data earlier in order to allow producers an opportunity to analyze the data and develop marketing plans. Because of this request, the 2003 report is provided to you at this time. We have appreciated working with the Hop industry this year. If you have questions or comments regarding any part of this program, please call our office at (360)902-1940. Ray Garibay State Statistician 2003 HOP PRODUCTION Hop production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2003 totaled 54.6 million pounds, down 6 percent from the 2002 crop of 58.3 million pounds, and 18 percent below the 2001 production of 66.8 million pounds. Production in 2003 for Washington, Oregon and Idaho dropped 8 percent, 1 percent, and 5 percent, respectively. Washington showed a 4 percent acreage decrease in 2003. Both Idaho and Oregon had small increases in their 2003 acreage. Yields declined in all three States in 2003. Washington, with 2,050 pounds per acre, was down 83 pounds from last year. Oregon's average yield dropped 66 pounds, to 1,626 pounds per acre in 2003. In Idaho, yields averaged 1,536 pounds per acre, 88 pounds less than a year ago. Washington growers produced 73 percent of the U.S. hop crop for 2003. Columbus/Tomahawk, Zeus, Galena, and Willamette were the leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 62 percent of the State's hop crop. In Oregon, Nugget and Willamette were the major varieties, accounting for 68 percent of the hops harvested.
