NATIONAL HOP REPORT Washington Agricultural Statistics PO Box 609 Olympia, WA December 16, 2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hop Growers of America (HGA) has contracted with our agency to provide a statistical profile of the Hop industry for 2004. This includes acreage, yield, production, stocks, and price information. We are pleased to present the final 2004 acreage, yield, and production by variety and by states. In the past, these data have been released to the public in mid-January. We have been requested by HGA to release the data earlier in order to allow producers an opportunity to analyze the data and develop marketing plans. Because of this request, the 2004 report is provided to you at this time. We have appreciated working with the Hop industry this year. If you have questions or comments regarding any part of this program, please call our office at (360)902-1940. Ray Garibay State Statistician --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2004 HOP PRODUCTION Hops: Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2004 totaled 55.2 million pounds, up 1 percent from the 2003 crop of 54.6 million pounds, and 5 percent below the 2002 production of 58.3 million pounds. Washington's 2004 production increased 4 percent. Production in Idaho and Oregon dropped 2 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Acreage declined in all three states in 2004. Washington showed a 1 percent acreage decrease, Idaho was down 5 percent and Oregon was down 11 percent. However, yields improved over a year ago in all three states. Washington, with 2,137 pounds per acre, was up 87 pounds from last year. In Idaho, yields averaged 1,588 pounds per acre, 52 pounds more than a year ago. Oregon's average yield increased 60 pounds, to 1,686 pounds per acre in 2004. Washington growers produced 75 percent of the U.S. hop crop for 2004. Zeus, Columbus/Tomahawk, Galena, and Willamette were the leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 68 percent of the State's hop crop. In Oregon, Willamette and Nugget were the major varieties, accounting for 71 percent of the hops harvested. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hops: Area Harvested and Yield by Variety, State, and United States,2002-2004 State and Area Harvested Yield Variety 2002 2003 2004 2002 2003 2004 Acres Pounds IDAHO: Chinook Cluster Galena Mt.
