WASHINGTON AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE U.S. Department of Agriculture Washington Agricultural Statistics Service P.O. Box 609, Olympia, WA 98507 NATIONAL HOP REPORT December 19, 2002 __________________________________________________________________________ The Hop Growers of America (HGA) has contracted with our agency to provide a statistical profile of the Hop industry for 2002. This includes acreage, yield, production, stocks, and price information. We are pleased to present the final 2002 acreage, yield, and production by variety and by states. In the past, these data have been released to the public in mid-January. We have been requested by HGA to release the data earlier in order to allow producers an opportunity to analyze the data and develop marketing plans. Because of this request, the 2002 report is provided to you at this time. We have appreciated working with the Hop industry. If you have questions or comments regarding any part of this program, please call our office at (360)902-1940. Ray Garibay State Statistician __________________________________________________________________________ 2002 HOPS PRODUCTION Hops production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2002 totaled 58.3 million pounds, down 13 percent from the 2001 crop of 66.8 million pounds, and 14 percent below the 2000 production of 67.6 million pounds. Production in Washington and Oregon dropped 15 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Idaho's production increased nearly 20 percent from a year ago. All three States reduced their acreage in 2002. There was a six thousand acre drop in Washington due to a grower sponsored, voluntary, acreage reduction program. Yields in Washington and Idaho increased in 2002. Washington, with 2,133 pounds per acre, was up 205 pounds from last year. In Idaho, yields averaged 1,624 pounds per acre, 295 pounds more than a year ago. Oregon's average yield dropped 183 pounds, to 1,692 pounds per acre in 2002. Washington growers produced 74 percent of the U.S. hops crop for 2002. Columbus/Tomahawk, Zeus, Galena, and Willamette were the leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 66 percent of the State's hop crop. Powdery mildew and water supplies were not major concerns in 2002, and alpha yields were higher than normal. In Oregon, Nugget and Willamette acreages dropped, but still accounted for 73 percent of the hops harvested. ******************************************************************************* Hops: Area Harvested and Yield by Variety, State, and United States, 2000-2002 _______________________________________________________________________________ State and Area Harvested Yield Variety 2000 2001 2002 2000 2001 2002 _______________________________________________________________________________ Acres Pounds IDAHO: Chinook 170 120 2,000 1,627 Cluster 198 234 1,943 1,553 Galena 535 552 1,815 1,492 Mt.
