Catfish Value of Sales Up 2 Percent from 1999 Catfish growers in the 13 selected States had sales of 501 million dollars during 2000, up 2 percent from the previous year. The top four States (Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana) accounted for 96 percent of the U. S. total sales. Nationwide sales of all foodsize fish increased 1 percent from 1999 to 469 million dollars. Fingerlings and fry sales totaled 23.4 million dollars, an increase of 24 percent from 1999. Sales of stockers totaled 7.65 million dollars in 2000, more than double the 3.65 million dollars sold the previous year. By point of first sale, direct sales to processors accounted for 95 percent of the total sales of foodsize fish while 87 percent of the stocker sales were to other producers. Remaining sales were for recreational use, to live haulers, or for retail, government, or other uses. Water Acres Up 2 Percent The water surface acres being used for catfish production as of January 1, 2001, totaled 190,320 acres, up 2 percent from a year earlier. Of the total acres, 6,085 are to be renovated during the period of January 1, 2001 to June 30, 2001. An additional 5,065 acres are under construction or expected to be constructed and in use by July 1, 2001. During the period of July 1, 2000 through December 31, 2000, 4,510 acres were taken out of production. As of January 1, 2001, 156,855 acres were being used for foodfish production, 24,580 acres were being used for fingerling production, and 5,615 acres were being used for broodfish. Inventory Numbers Catfish producers had 1.33 million broodfish on hand January 1, 2001, down 4 percent from January 1, 2000. Large foodsize fish (over 3 pounds per fish) on hand totaled 6.87 million on January 1, 2001, up 18 percent from a year ago. The number of medium foodsize (1.50 pounds to 3 pounds per fish) increased 14 percent to 87.9 million, and small foodsize fish (0.75 pound to 1.50 pounds per fish) numbers increased 20 percent to 240 million. Large stockers (over 180 pounds to 750 pounds per 1000 fish) on hand January 1, 2001, at 349 million fish, were down 2 percent from the previous year. Small stocker (over 60 pounds to 180 pounds per 1000 fish) numbers increased 4 percent to 450 million. There were 1.02 billion fingerlings on hand January 1, 2001, down 3 percent from January 1, 2000. The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 2000 totaled 58.5 million fish, down 4 percent from the previous year. The value of sales for the 2000 marketing year was 63.7 million dollars, down 2 percent from 1999. Based on the dollar value, 70 percent were sold to processors and 18 percent were sold to fee and recreational fishing establishments. The number of 6"-12" trout sold during 2000 totaled 7.6 million fish, an increase of 9 percent from 1999. The average value per pound was $2.12 during 2000, down 39 cents from the 1999 price. The total value of sales was 6.68 million dollars during 2000, up 22 percent from the previous year. The major sales outlet for 6"-12" trout was to fee and recreational fishing establishments with 47 percent of the total sales, followed by other producers with 17 percent, and processors with 15 percent. The number of 1"-6" trout sold during 2000 totaled 9.83 million, a 1 percent decrease from the previous year. The average value per 1,000 fish was $142.00 during 2000, a $1.00 increase from 1999. The total value of sales was 1.39 million dollars, down slightly from last year's total. Trout egg sales in 2000 totaled 287 million eggs, down 8 percent from the 312 million eggs sold during the previous year. The average value per 1,000 eggs during 2000 was $14.00 down $1.90 from 1999. Distributed Trout Trout distributed for restoration, conservation, and recreational purposes, primarily by State and Federal hatcheries, included 7.99 million 12" or longer fish, 50.4 million 6"-12", and 91.3 million fingerlings. The estimated value of fish and eggs distributed totaled 60.9 million dollars, a 3 percent decrease from 1999. Losses of Fish Total losses of all trout intended for sale were 29.6 million fish during 2000, with 84.5 percent being lost to disease and 9.1 percent lost to predators. Losses to trout raised for distribution were primarily due to disease (67 percent) and predators (30 percent). Methodology and Definitions Survey Procedures: All known catfish and trout operators and trout hatcheries were contacted during the first half of January by mail, telephone, and personal interview. Estimation Procedures: Sound statistical methodology was employed to derive the estimates from reported data. All data were analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation were compared to their own past operating profile and to trends of similar operations. Data for missing operations were estimated based on similar operations or historical data. Reliability: Catfish and trout production estimates are based on a census of all known active producers and, therefore, have no sampling variability. However, estimates may be subject to errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing of the data. These errors are minimized through strict quality controls in the edit and summarization process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Revision policy: Estimates for the previous year are subject to revision when current estimates are made. Revisions are the result of late or corrected data. Definitions Used for Catfish Production: Broodfish - Fish kept for egg production, including males. Broodfish produce the fertilized eggs which go to hatcheries. The most desirable size is 3 to 10 pounds or 4 to 6 years of age. Large Foodsize - Fish weighing over 3 pounds. Medium Foodsize - Fish weighing over one and one-half pounds to 3 pounds. Small Foodsize - Fish weighing over three-fourths pound to one and one-half pounds. Large Stockers - Fish weighing over 180 pounds to 750 pounds per 1,000 fish. Small Stockers - Fish weighing over 60 pounds to 180 pounds per 1,000 fish. Fingerlings/Fry - Fish weighing 60 pounds per 1,000 fish and less. Definitions Used for Trout Production: 12" or Longer Fish: Grown commercially for food, usually weighing from three-fourths to one and one-half pounds. 6"-12" Fish: Usually stockers that weigh less than three-fourths of a pound. Fingerlings: Fish usually from 1 to 6 inches long. Live Haulers: Person who buys live fish on the farm and functions as a middleman. Terms Used for Losses: Disease: Includes losses from both parasitic and bacterial caused sickness. Theft/Vandalism: The unauthorized removal of fish and/or the destruction of property causing a loss of fish by intentional acts of persons known or unknown. Chemicals: Includes losses from pesticides or herbicide poisoning. Drought: Includes losses from lack of water causing oxygen depletion. Floods: Includes losses from too much water washing the fish away. Predators: Includes losses from mink, otters, birds, and other animals. The next "Catfish Production" report will be released at 3 p.m. ET on July 30, 2001. The next "Catfish and Trout Production" report will be released in February 2002.
