Twenty-four commercial fresh market vegetables, 3 melons, 8 processing vegetables, and strawberries are included in this handbook. The information shown identifies major varieties of vegetables covered in the vegetable estimating program. It updates the information contained in the previous edition of this handbook issued February 1977. The Field Offices of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service compiled the basic information, prepared the estimates of ususal dates, and designated the important areas of production and major varieties for their respective States. Growers and horticultural specialists were consulted to verify information published. Seasonal classifications are listed for the fresh market crops in each State, as in the regular programs of vegetable reports. Classifications are determined by the season when the bulk of each crop is usually harvested. These seasonal groupings are as follows: Winter: January, February, March Spring: April, May, June Summer: July, August, September Fall: October, November, December There is some overlap in the marketing seasons for individual crops because weather and economic factors frequently disturb normal harvest schedules. Consequently, the classifications employed are generally less precise than the dates indicate. Data for each of the 8 principal processing crops follow the fresh market segment of the commodity. Except for spinach, estimates for processing vegetables are not available by seasonal groups. Harvesting dates for most vegetables refer to the period when the crop is removed from the field. For crops which are left in the field to cure, harvesting dates refer to the time the crop is pulled, cut, or picked. Dates are not necessarily those of marketing or processing. For perishable crops, harvesting and marketing or processing periods are nearly identical, but for storage crops, such as cabbage and onions, the marketing season extends beyond the end of harvest. In areas where production for processing is from acreage grown primarily for fresh market, harvest for processing often follows the harvest for fresh market. Planting dates refer to the period during which seeding or transplanting is usually done. It is recognized that fields may, at times, be planted before or after the normal period indicated. Dates shown do not take into account abnormal planting seasons caused by climatic or economic factors. The principal producing counties are grouped by geographic areas within States. County names are listed in order of their importance. Where counties are of equal importance, names are listed alphabetically.
