BL_LS751 Billings, MT Thu Jan 24, 2019 USDA Market News Billings Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 01/24/2019 Receipts: 2,284 Last Week: 2,912 Year Ago: 3,865 Compared to the week: Feeder steers and heifers were scarcely tested last week as bred cows made up the majority of the offering. Thus no trend is available on feeder cattle this week. Feeder quality this week was mostly plain to average with a very limited offering of attractive feeders. Flesh conditions were mostly very light to light. This helped create moderate to good demand for some sets of ordinary feeders. Demand overall was mostly moderate. Pen conditions continue to be an issue in the corn belt as winter weather in the north and heavy rains in the south have made pen conditions very poor. This has limited demand to some extent as feedlots have not wanted to accept new loads of feeders. Market activity this week was moderate. Weigh up cows sold on very good demand as all packers showed strong demand for cows and bulls for immediate harvest. Packers out bid feeding buyers in many instances as they paid sharply higher prices for cows to fill harvest needs this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Slaughter bulls sold 5.00-8.00 higher, with instances of 10.00 higher seen in places. Feeding cows were very lightly tested as packers purchased most of the cow offering for immediate harvest. Cow quality was mostly average this week and most were full to very full, offering buyers below average weigh conditions. The feeder cattle offering was 53 percent steers and bulls, 47 percent heifers with 34 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today’s supply consisted of 88 percent feeder cattle, 5 percent slaughter cows, near 1 percent slaughter bulls, 5 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will be Thursday Jan 31th, 2019.
