Demand was moderate to good across the state. Some areas of the state that received snow last weekend sales of small square bales picked up. Artic temperatures in the forecast over this weekend and several reports that cattlemen and feedlots are trying to stockpile some hay for the near term feeding needs. All sales are dollars per ton FOB the field or hay barn, unless otherwise noted. Eastern/Central Nebraska Alfalfa: Premium large squares 180.00; Good large squares 140.00-160.00. Good large rounds 100.00-115.00; Fair large rounds 72.50-87.50. Alfalfa/Orchard mix: Premium large rounds 120.00. Grass Hay: Premium large rounds 100.00-105.00; Good large rounds 85.00-90.00; Fair large rounds 65.00-75.00. Premium small squares 160.00-170.00, some 6.50-8.00 per bale on small lots. Cornstalk bales 60.00-65.00, few at 70.00. Cane in large rounds 80.00. Small squares bales of straw 3.50-4.00 per bale. Platte Valley area of Nebraska Alfalfa: Good round bales 100.00-110.00. Premium: Early maturity, i.e., pre-bloom in legumes and pre head in grass hays, extra leafy and fine stemmed-factors indicative of a high nutritive content. Hay is green and free of damage. Good: Early to average maturity, i.e., early to mid-bloom in Legumes and early head in grass hays, leafy, fine to medium stems and free of damage other than slight discoloration. Fair: Late maturity, i.e., mid to late-bloom in legumes, head-in grass hays, moderate or below leaf content, and generally coarse stemmed. Hay may show light damage. Utility: Hay in very late maturity, such as mature seed pods in Legumes or mature head in grass hays, coarse stemmed.
